Safe Scouting
To prepare adult leaders to conduct Scouting activities in a safe and prudent manner, the Guide to Safe Scouting presents policies and
guidelines to protect members from known hazards that have been identified through over eighty years of experience.
Weekend camping
Scouting is designed to take place outdoors in settings where you can find real adventure. Weekend camping trips are held monthly during
the school year, usually within an hour's drive of the North Baltimore area. Campout locations and programs are determined by the Patrol Leader's Council with the help of the Troop
Committee.
Camporees
Camporees are weekend campouts on a district or council level that bring together a number of troops to share their skills and develop
friendships.
Weekend High Adventure
High Adventure activities provide the opportunity to put your outdoor skills to the test and to see and try new things. High Adventure
trips are usually longer drives away from the Jackson area, and often require more advanced camping skills than regular weekend camping trips.
Summer Camp
Scouts who have attended a week at Pioneer Scout Reservation have the opportunity to head to the rustic woods for a week of cool camping.
The week includes opportunities to earn merit badges or explore new skills like canoeing and backpacking.
Jamborees
The national jamboree is a gathering of thousands of Scouts from all over the country. Each jamboree features more than a week of camping
skills, exhibits, arena shows, and special events. Held every four years, national jamborees are memorable experiences for all Scouts and leaders who attend.
During the summer of 2001, the Boy Scouts of America held the National Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill near Fredericksburg, Virginia. over
40,000 Scouts, Leaders and staff gathered for the 10 day event. The next National Jamboree will be held in the summer of 2005.
World jamborees, also held every four years, are unique opportunities for young people from many countries to camp with each other, share
knowledge, develop friendships, and enjoy the spirit of international Scouting.
High Adventure Bases
Northern Tier National High Adventure Programs, based in the superb canoe country of northern Minnesota and Canada offer challenging
canoe expeditions, fishing, and backcountry camping, plus skiing and other cold-weather activities during the winter months.
Florida National High Adventure Sea Base in the Florida Keys specializes in sailing, scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing, oceanography, and
other exciting marine activities.
Philmont Scout Ranch, encompassing over 137,000 acres in New Mexico's rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains, offers rock
climbing, wilderness survival, horseback riding, archaeology, trout fishing, and backpacking along miles of scenic trails to campsites in remote valleys and at the edges of alpine meadows.
Several Scouts from Troop 18 are fortunate to have the opportunity to attend Philmont each summer as participants in the Andrew Jackson Council Philmont trek. |
