Scouting in Ohio
Founder of Boy Scouts came from Cincinnati
On June 21, 1850, Daniel Carter Beard, a founding father of the Boy Scouts of America, was born in Cincinnati. Beard grew up in Cincinnati and Covington, where his imagination was fueled by
tales of the exploits of Daniel Boone and others he called "American Knights in Buckskin." That love of history and the wilderness never left him.
He moved to New York, where he gained popularity as a magazine and book illustrator. He illustrated Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's
Court.
Beard formed the Society of the Sons of Daniel Boone, renamed the Boy Pioneers in 1905, to keep the spirit of the
pioneers alive. His group became part of the Boy Scouts of America, which he helped found in 1910.
He designed the Boy Scout fleur-de-lis and received a patent for it July 4, 1911. Beard also wrote and illustrated articles for Boys' Life magazine until his death in 1941. In 1977,
the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge was built over the Ohio River between Cincinnati and Newport.
